According to Polish folklore, one fine spring day a group of kittens went chasing butterflies by the stream. As they pranced by the babbling water, their excitement got the best of them, and they fell into the rushing water. Mamma cat was too far to rescue her kittens and wept in her helpless state.
Responding to her tears, the willows at the water's edge swept their graceful branches over the water's surface, allowing the kittens to grab on tightly until they were pulled into safety. From that day, every spring, willow branches sprout tiny fur-like buds where the kittens once clung.
